How APPLE will disrupt the AI space
Discover how APPLE is set to revolutionize the AI landscape, unleashing a new era of innovation and possibilities. Get ready for the future with their groundbreaking advancements! šš
On 11th December 2015, Sam Altman along with the CEO of X, Elon Musk, and various other Silicon Valley figures joined together and founded OpenAI.
It was during the same time when Musk said AI was "biggest existential threat" to humanity. Slowly by 2018 he steps down from OpenAIās board of directors after a disagreement with senior executives over the speed of AI advancement. He "didn't agree" with where OpenAI was headed.
On November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, and this kicked off an AI Arms race! ChatGPT4.0 became a global phenomenon, because it is capable of human-level performance!

Everyone wants to become the next AI superpower.
Microsoft struck a $10Bn deal with OpenAI, to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and ādemocratize AI as a new technology platformā. This basically gave Microsoft the power to infuse ChatGPT into everything, including their new Bing!
Google went ācode redā after seeing the meteoric success of ChatGPT and by 21st March 2023, they released Bard and went all in on Generative AI (Sundar Pichai and his team said āAIā 143 times during the Google I/O conference!).

Even Baidu, a chinese conglomerate created āErnie botā.
But where is Apple? They were mysteriously silent the entire timeā¦
While Google and Microsoft were battling it out in the generative AI battleground (even amazon entered the arena), Apple was absent from the entire conversation.
Why was Apple silent?
When the worldās powerful technology companies simply couldnāt stop talking about Generative AI, Apple barely talks about Artificial Intelligence.

If you take a look the Apple conferences like WWDC, their September events etc., they usually steer away from using the term āartificial intelligenceā because of the general negative impression that it is associated with among the public. Instead they come up with their own terminology like Deep Fusion, and Improved Dictation. They also often use the phrase āMachine Learningā.
There are few āother reasonsā as to why they donāt use the term āAIā in their conferences:
#1 Simplifying the message
Apple avoids complex jargon like āArtificial intelligenceā, and reduce the unfamiliarity effect from their users.
#2 User focused approach
They focus only on the outcomes of the new update on the userās day-to-day lives, other than the underlying technology behind it.
#3 Privacy & Security considerations
AI (Generative AI in particular) poses several security concerns because of its ability to process personal data. So Apple simply doesnāt want to be associated with that, when āPrivacyā is one of their major unique selling point!
Then it begs us the question, why has Apple decided to step into generative AI now?
Project Ajax & AppleGPT
Apple built its own framework that can create large language models, called "Ajax," as well as a chatbot service that internal engineers are calling Apple GPT, according to Bloomberg citing unnamed sources.

Ajax is actually based on Google JAX framework, which is used to perform automatic differentiation, numerical computations, and acceleration of code on CPUs, GPUs, and other hardware accelerators,
In simple terms, this makes it easier for computer programs to do math quickly and accurately. It's especially useful for tasks like training and improving machine learning models.
Tim Cook has also highlighted that there is going to something ābigā coming from Apple related to āAIā next year!
Something thatāll blow our minds!
We are not yet sure if its going to be a public AI chatbot, a new AI product or a partnership involving their AI chatbot, but if its going to be a AI chatbot, then these are some of the use cases we can expect when its going to be integrated with the iOS and macOS.
#1 Make Siri smarter
We always wanted Siri to be more than or atleast equivalent to its rival Google Assistant, and AppleGPT might be the upgrade Siri needs.
#2 iMessage Upgrades
This can help us in customizing replies and messages to our individual needs.
#3 Make good Photos ābetterā
We will be able to enhance existing images or create new images, all with just a prompt. This can enable Appleās post image processing to be on par with Google, who is at a league of its own.
#4 Our own personalized DJ
This will enable us to craft or remix new songs or even create a version of āSpotifyās new AI DJā tailored to our music taste, all made available on Apple Music.
These are just some use cases, and Apple surely has some innovative use cases in their mind!
With major companies like Apple entering the space, higher competition means more companies striving for higher standards, which is what consumers want and deserve.
Appleās AI Plans Are Bigger Than We Think
Just an announcement from Mark Gurman and Bloomberg on the AppleGPT, made AAPL stocks rise from $193 to $197.
We can see how AI is a prime indicator in stock prices now, so surely Apple wonāt be leaving this golden opportunity!
Acquiring the most AI startups than any other company
According to the GlobalData report, āApple, Google, Microsoft and Metaā collectively undertook 60 acquisitions in the AI tech space during 2016ā2020 while Apple alone has acquired about 25 companies.
Apple has been ramping up its acquisition of AI companies, mainly at making Siri smarter and create new features on its iPhones & macs.
However thereās one acquisition which we should be aware of - Xnor.ai
The acquisition of Xnor.ai was made to improve its on-edge processing capabilities, which has become important as it eliminates the need for data to be sent to the cloud, thereby improving data privacy.
So this along with the neural engine capabilities, Apple will be able to deliver efficient and private in-device AI capabilities, which no other competitor is able to do yet.
This will strengthen its position as the most privacy-sensitive big technology company
We can expect a major announcement in this WWDC or during any other Apple event.
Until thenā¦
